The Ancient Practice of V-Steaming

What Is V-Steaming?

Vaginal steaming (also called yoni steaming or v-steaming) is a gentle, time-honored practice of sitting over warm herbal steam to bring heat, moisture, and plant medicine directly to the vulva and vaginal tissues. This area of the body is rich in blood flow and highly receptive, allowing the warmth and herbal qualities to be absorbed deeply and effectively.

V-steaming offers space to slow down, soften, and listen. It is both physiological and ritual...supporting tissue health while inviting reconnection with the wisdom held in the pelvic bowl.

An Ancient Practice Remembered

V-steaming is an ancient practice found across cultures and continents, particularly as a cornerstone of postpartum care. For thousands of years, women have used steam to support uterine cleansing, tissue repair, and energetic integration after birth, menstruation, and major life transitions.

In many indigenous traditions, steaming was understood as essential, not optional, for restoring balance after times of opening, loss, or transformation. Many of our ancestral and wise woman practices have been forgotten within our culture...but a remembrance is rising of what women have always known: warmth heals, circulation restores, and ritual matters.

Elements of a V-Steam

  • Water - Water carries memory, intention and receptivity. In v-steaming, it acts as the vessel for heat and plant medicine, supporting softening, cleansing, and emotional fluidity in the pelvic space.

  • Steam - Steam is water in motion, rising and changing form. Its warmth increases circulation and relaxation while energetically supporting release, transmutation, and renewal.

  • Herbal Medicine - Thoughtfully chosen herbs can offer targeted support : soothing, tonifying, cleansing, hydrating, etc. Through the steam, the medicinal properties of the plants are gently delivered to receptive pelvic tissues, allowing the herbs to work both locally and systemically.

  • Timing & Cycles - V-steaming is traditionally practiced in rhythm with the menstrual cycle, the moon, postpartum windows, or seasonal and life transitions. Honoring timing is part of the medicine, working with the body when it is naturally inclined toward release, restoration, or integration.

  • Presence & Rest - This is a practice of slowing down. Steaming invites stillness, warmth, and inward attention. When the body is supported in rest, the nervous system softens, allowing deeper layers of healing to unfold.
